Problem
What’s the difference between a URI and a URL? Not to mention, what is a URI? If you’re consistently asking friends for that URL of theirs, you might want to read this post.
Solution
In a simple sentence: Uniform Resource Locator is a subset of Uniform Resource Identifier. Ergo, you should generally use the term URI, rather than URL. Here’s what W3C has simply stated:
Future specifications and related documentation should use the general term “URI” rather than the more restrictive terms “URL” and “URN”.
If you’d like to become more knowledgeable as to why URL and URN are still useful, I recommend reading a more in-depth article, such as Matt Read’s wonderful article entitled “URI, URL, URN, You Are What?”
